An evening with Gilbert King

Hosted by Friends of the Dallas Public Library

Gilbert King

As part of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize’s Centennial Campfire Initiative, Friends of the Dallas Public Library will present Gilbert King, author of the 2013 award-winning Devil in the Grove on Thursday, July 21, 2016 in the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library auditorium  beginning at 7 pm.

Set in the post-World War II South, Devil in the Grove follows NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall through one of his most important, yet lesser cases defending four young black men know as “the Groveland Boys.” King’s book explores the political and social climate in a state whose main industry was dependent upon cheap labor afforded by Jim Crow laws. The program will include a 20-minute presentation by Gilbert King on the importance of this historic case. He will be interviewed by Chris Vognar, Culture Critic for The Dallas Morning News. Topics to be discussed include Mr. King’s research on Thurgood Marshall, this case and its lasting impact, as well as King’s writing process.

Community Partners include: Humanities Texas, Dallas Public Library, and The Dallas Morning News.
