'The Little Match Girl Passion,' Reimagined With Live Chorus and Ballet
David Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical score interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic story will be staged as a ballet with a live chorus at the Moody Performance Hall on Dec. 7 and 8.
A collaboration between the Avant Chamber Ballet and the Verdigris Ensemble, Lang's music will be brought to life with an emphasis on the combination of dance and the human voice. Katie Cooper will be the choreographer and the music will be conducted by Sam Brukhman.
David Lang won the Prize in 2008 for his composition The Little Match Girl Passion, commissioned by the Carnegie Hall Corporation and the Perth Theater and Concert Hall. It interprets the classic children's story about hope and faith. Lang was inspired by both the book and Bach's Saint Matthew Passion. Lang's long career in music includes co-founding and being the artistic director of the New York music festival, Bang on a Can.
