Bringing News to Light – Prize Winning Investigative Reporting

Moderator Charles L. Overby, chairman of the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at the University of Mississippi and former editor of the Clarion Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi (Gold Medal for Distinguished Public Service, 1983), and distinguished panelists will explore how ground-breaking investigative reporting transforms community conversation.
Panelists include:
Mark Ethridge, managing editor, The Charlotte Observer (1979 – 1988), helped direct Public Service Pulitzer Prize-winning investigations of the textile industry (1981) and the PTL scandal involving Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker (1988).
Karen Garloch, part of a team of reporters and editors who were Pulitzer finalists (Local Reporting, 2013) for their investigation on how the state’s major nonprofit hospitals generate large profits and contribute to the high cost of health care.
Maria Henson, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing for her series about battered women for the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky (1992) and later helped to direct Tom Philp's Editorial Writing Prize-winning series about Yosemite National Park in The Sacramento Bee (2005).
Walker Lundy, retired editor of Saint Paul Pioneer Press in Saint Paul, Minnesota, who directed George Dohrmann's Beat Reporting Prize-winning series about academic cheating by members of the University of Minnesota basketball team (2000).
