James C. Millstone Memorial Lecture: The Pulitzer Tradition and St. Louis

This two-day celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prizes begins with Philip Kennicott, the Washington Post’s Pulitzer-winning art and architecture critic, delivering the James C. Millstone Memorial Lecture on the topic: The Pulitzer Tradition of Social Justice in a Snapchat World

Following the Lecture will be a panel titled The Pulitzer Tradition Today, moderated by Roy Harris Jr., a former Millstone lecturer and the author of Pulitzer's Gold. The panel includes Jon Sawyer, founder of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting; Margaret Freivogel, a founder and former editor of the St. Louis Beacon, Emily Rauh Pulitzer; and Robert Cohen and David Carson of the Post-Dispatch photo staff, which won a 2015 Pulitzer for its work on the streets of Ferguson.

The noon panel the following day will focus on Social Justice and Ferguson.  Michael A. Wolff, dean of SLU law will moderate. Tony Messenger and Kevin Horrigan, Pulitzer finalists for Post-Dispatch editorials on Ferguson will be joined by lawyers and reporters who have who have worked for or written about social justice issues, including municipal court reform. Pulitzer-winning Ferguson photos and political cartoons of Daniel R. Fitzpatrick and Bill Mauldin will be displayed digitally and in exhibit form throughout the two-day event.
