Journalism and Democracy in California

Hosted by California Humanities and San José State University

As part of a national celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize, California Humanities will convene a series of discussion forums throughout the state as part of the Pulitzer Prize Centennial Campfires Initiative.  Aimed at deepening the public’s engagement with contemporary issues through a humanities lens, On the Road with California Humanities will connect Pulitzer-prize winning authors, artists, journalists, and other notable thinkers who are helping to guide California along the road to a vibrant future.

California journalism has a long and proud history. Now, in a time of dramatic economic and demographic shifts and environmental crisis, journalism is more essential than ever to California’s civic life. What is the future of journalism in the very state that’s given the world the information revolution of apps and social media?

Pulitzer Prize winner Hector Tobar leads a discussion with fellow Pulitzer Prize winner Rob Kuznia and authors and journalists Frances Dinkelspiel and Mark Arax on the evolution of investigative, governmental and cultural reporting, and what new stories California journalists are tackling.
