In Stockton, California: Caitlin Dickerson, Anna Wolfe and Nicole Carroll on Reporting Stories That Matter
In partnership with San Joaquin Delta College and local media outlet Stocktonia, Pulitzer on the Road came to Stockton, California on Thursday, February 13, 2025 for a community conversation on current issues in journalism.
The conversation featured three Pulitzer-honored journalists: 2023 Explanatory Reporting winner Caitlin Dickerson, staff writer at The Atlantic; 2023 Local Reporting winner Anna Wolfe, reporter at Mississippi Today; and Pulitzer Board member and 2018 Explanatory Reporting staff contributor Nicole Carroll. Carroll is the former editor-in-chief of USA Today and is a professor of practice at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. The conversation was moderated by Marjorie Miller of the Pulitzer Prizes.
Along with discussing their own reporting, especially on immigration and Mississippi's welfare scandal, the journalists talked about how they uncover stories that matter, and the work and effort required to stick with a story and dig deeper. They discussed the fraught landscape today, with the media under threat, and challenges faced by local news outlets especially. They also talked about how journalists rely on the public for information but also, for feedback, to help them frame stories in ways that connect with the public. As Dickerson puts it, "Journalism is a two-way street."
Fierce Mustang Media Group, San Joaquin Delta College's student run media team, filmed the event. A video will be made available here soon.
In addition to this public conversation in Stockton, the journalists also met with students from San Joaquin Delta College earlier in the day. You can read more about that event here.
